If you sold your vehicle, there are a couple of things you need to do so that our records are up to date and to determine if you can get a refund on some of the taxes you've paid.
Step 1
provide your sale documents to the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office so they can update your records and prevent you from continuing to be taxed on that vehicle. Turn in your license plate to the DMV if you did not transfer it to another vehicle.
Step 2
send the documents showing the sale of your car to the Beaufort County Auditor's Office. Also submit your receipt for turning in your license plate. When you do that, inquire whether you are eligible for a prorated refund of your property taxes. Vehicle taxes are paid in advance so if you sell your vehicle (or move outside of Beaufort County) after paying your taxes, you may be eligible for a partial refund.
