My primary residence is in Beaufort County. How do I apply for the Legal Residence Exemption?

The Treasurer's Office sends bills and collects the tax payments that are due. While we don't have authority over tax rates, discounts, or property values, we don’t want you paying any more than necessary, and the Legal Residence Exemption also called the 4% Special Assessment, can be a big discount.

If you occupy your property and it is your legal residence, you may be eligible for this discount. To apply, you must complete the Legal Residence Application and submit it to the Beaufort County Assessor’s Office, the team responsible for processing and approving the applications. If you have additional questions you may contact them at Assessor@bcgov.net or by calling 843-255-2400.

Helpful Hints!

If you're approved for this discount, don't assume that you will receive it forever. If you have any changes to your property title, such as adding a spouse, putting your property into a trust, or moving, you will need to re-apply.
