What is the 120 Day Vehicle Tax bill that I just received?

Congratulations on your new car! The bill you received is called a 120-Day Vehicle Tax Notice and are for taxes on the vehicle you recently purchased. These taxes were not paid at the time you purchased your vehicle.

When a South Carolina resident purchases a new car from a South Carolina dealership and the dealership registers the vehicle with the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV), the new vehicle owner will receive a license plate and decal prior to paying the property taxes. A 120-Day Vehicle Tax notice is for the property taxes associated with the receipt of that license plate and decal.

You will only receive this type of notice once. Going forward, you will receive a vehicle property tax bill every year when it is time to renew your vehicle's registration.

Helpful Hints!

When this tax isn't paid, it'll be added to the vehicle property tax bill you will receive in the following year and could delay the receipt of your vehicle registration or result in delinquency proceedings. Sign up each of your accounts for e-billing to avoid mailing issues or delays so you can easily stay current and up-to-date on your bills.
