What are unclaimed funds?

Unclaimed funds are money owed to individuals who cannot be located by Beaufort County. In most cases, these funds were initially sent to an individual in the form of a check but the recipient never cashed it.

Just because a check isn't cashed, doesn't mean the money is no longer yours. Beaufort County holds these funds for a period of time so the recipient has a chance to contact the County and claim them. If the funds are not claimed, the Treasurer's Office will submit the funds to the South Carolina State Treasurer's Office where they will remain until the recipient claims them.

Your funds are always yours so check periodically with our Office as well as the State Treasurer's Office to see if you have funds to claim.

Additionally, there is no fee to claim your funds. If you are contacted by an individual or firm offering to return money to you for a fee, contact the South Carolina Unclaimed Property Program Offices before signing any agreement.
