After the Tax Sale - What to Expect

If you were a successful bidder at the tax sale, you're one step closer to obtaining the property. After the auction, delinquent taxpayers have a year and one day to redeem their property ; meaning, the property owner still has time to save their property.

If the real property or mobile home is redeemed...

A 12% annualized rate interest is paid by the redeeming party to the bidder and is capped at the minimum bid amount for that property. We will notify you by mail and, if available, via email as well, and ask that you return the Temporary Tax Sale Receipt. This is needed in order for our team to refund your bid money, any fees paid, and applicable interest. In a situation where a bidder cannot produce the Temporary Tax Sale Receipt, a $100 fee will be charged and there will be a 10 day waiting period before your check will be issued.

If a property is not redeemed...

A delinquent tax sale deed is issued within approximately 90 days of the end of the redemption period. The deed will be in the name of the successful bidder and submitted to the Beaufort County Register of Deeds for recording. The recording process will take four to six weeks from the time the deed is submitted.

If the sale is voided...

The Treasurer may void the tax sale for real property or mobile home at any time prior to the issuance of a delinquent tax deed in accordance with South Carolina State Statute 12-51-150. If this occurs, the bidder will be notified by mail and their bid money, applicable fees, and actual interest earned will be refunded to them.
