What is the Forfeited Land Commission?

The Forfeited Land Commission (FLC) is a committee comprised of the Beaufort County Treasurer, Register of Deeds, and Auditor. This committee is charged with holding the properties that were auctioned at the delinquent tax sale but didn't receive a bid.

When this happens, the property still has a redemption period. If left unredeemed, it is considered forfeited and reverts to the Forfeited Land Commission as the legal owner of said property after the end of the redemption period.

Although the tax sale may be completed, properties held by the FLC may still be bid upon and purchased by a bidder during our annual online FLC auction or by submitting a bid to the Treasurer's Office at any time.

Helpful Hints!

The delinquent property owner still has a year and a day from the tax sale to redeem their property, even if the property didn't receive a bid, and must do so in order to maintain ownership of their property. If the FLC receives a bid during this time, the bidder is entitled to receive the resulting interest if the property is redeemed.
